Nancy Pelosi’s Fashion Habits

The world watched Nancy Pelosi’s flight to Taiwan on Tuesday as close as people watched the man’s flight to space in the middle of the 20th century. Approximately three million people simultaneously checked the trajectory of her plane, escorted by the military forces of the two most powerful states – the USA and China. However, the 82-year-old Pelosi was relentless in her bravery and landed at the Taipei airport, demonstrating an impeccable knowledge of fashion diplomacy.

Pelosi flew to Taiwan in a perfectly tailored pink pantsuit. A jacket that delicately outlines the waist, straight pants, and heels are one of the favorite combinations of the speaker of the US House of Representatives.  She looked as stern as any male politician around her, but the color set her apart. Significantly, her choice fell on a pink shade, which is difficult to perceive without gender bias. However, it was with its help that Nancy Pelosi made it clear that she had serious intentions, no matter how innocent the color of her suit was.

The Pink Color

It is important to remember that the color pink began to be called “feminine” around the 1940s. For instance, the first lady of the USA, Mamie Eisenhower, loved this color, and marketers skillfully used it to promote women’s products. Then pink was associated with Jackie Kennedy, particularly with the pink Chanel tweed set that the first lady wore when her husband John Kennedy was assassinated.
Today, pink is a color that plays an important role in world politics. One can only recall the “Women’s March” in 2017 when thousands of people protested on the first day after the inauguration of Donald Trump, and pink became their symbol. Then Pelosi herself supported the protesters by coming out in a pink suit. However, her choice fell on its more luxurious shade – fuchsia later.
History remembers several equally important cases when working with color helped Nancy Pelosi. For example, once, she appeared in the House of Representatives in a yellow suit that stunned everyone. And she achieved her goal – she needed to emphasize the importance of the topic of women’s rights to free access to contraceptives. Also, many experts note her exit in a bright red Max Mara coat, which she chose to meet with Donald Trump, one of her opponents.

How Nancy Pelosi Communicates with Clothes

Today, the question of who is responsible for Nancy Pelosi’s style remains open. In the highest political echelons of the United States, it is considered indecent to reveal the names of stylists. However, the fact that professional stylists work with politicians is indicated by the tight schedules of political leaders — they  do not have time to choose clothes on their own.
It is known that Michelle Obama, the wife of the 44th president of the United States, Barack Obama, was helped in many ways by her adviser and assistant, Meredith Koop; vice president Kamala Harris has a person who is responsible for her appearance, but her name has not been disclosed.
Therefore, Nancy Pelosi’s style may also be supported by a high-class professional who is well known in politics and protocol and has excellent fashion taste.
Some media claim that Nancy’s style is the merit of her husband, a businessman from Northern California, Paul Pelosi, with whom she has been married since 1963. He allegedly not only selects outfits for his wife but also points out fashion mistakes. However, it’s still a mystery whether it is true. The Washington Post, for example, denies the rumors and writes that the speaker does not use her husband’s advice and shops for herself at places like Bergdorf and Donna Lewis, an independent boutique in Alexandria.

What Does Nancy Pelosi Wear Most Often

Nancy Pelosi’s outfits match her status: they are perfectly tailored and luxurious – she can afford to splurge on clothes. The Washington-based Center for Responsible Politics estimated in 2014 that the Pelosi family is worth more than $101 million. She and her husband own large stakes in Apple, Facebook, Disney, real estate in San Francisco, and vineyards in California.
If you look at Pelosi’s photos and scroll through her Instagram, you will notice the politician’s love for pantsuits. She chooses fitted jackets and bright colors, skillfully complementing ensembles with appropriate shoes and accessories.

Symbolism in Nancy Pelosi’s Clothes

Pelosi is well aware of how her choice of clothing can make a statement. She wore a white pantsuit to announce that the House of Representatives will take up articles of impeachment against Trump in 2019. This image also references the suffragettes, who opposed discrimination against women in general in political and economic life.
As you may know, she is called the woman who declared war on Trump. During his presidency, she was the third person in the US after the head of state and Vice President Mike Pence, but it was she who was called the most influential politician in Washington. Trump, on the other hand, did not take her seriously and often ignored her, believing that she had no place in politics, and on social networks, called Pelosi “nervous” and “stupid”, claiming that he considered her a “third-rate politician”.

Little did he know that Pelosi would be that renowned not only in the political world but also in the fashion one, offering the most recognizable outfits that inspire people daily.
